Revived Questions about Huma Abedin

My article in today's FrontPage magazine:

Revived Questions about Huma Abedin

By Matthew Vadum

Republican lawmakers are probing why Hillary Clinton’s longtime Islamist aide Huma Abedin was allowed to work at the State Department under a special, part-time status while simultaneously working at a politically-connected consulting firm.

Demands for information are coming from Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) after the public learned both women used Clinton’s private Internet server and email accounts for Department of State correspondence.

But that’s only part of the endless sleaze and intrigue surrounding Clinton.

The media has also reported that Sidney Blumenthal, the Clinton administration damage-control expert known for his relentless attacks on Clinton family enemies and for being the father of Israel-hating pseudo-journalist Max Blumenthal, was apparently doing freelance work for Mrs. Clinton. Clinton tried to hire the elder Blumenthal at State but the Obama White House nixed the appointment because of Blumenthal’s aggressively slimy attacks on Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign.

After Blumenthal’s email was hacked in 2013, it was revealed that “starting weeks before” the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, “Blumenthal supplied intelligence” to then-Secretary Clinton that was “gathered by a secret network that included a former CIA clandestine service officer.”

Reports got some of the details wrong, according to the Wall Street Journal‘s James Taranto.

“The reporters asked the most obvious question and got a partial answer: ‘A Clinton spokesman told Gawker and ProPublica . . . that she has turned over’—meaning to the State Department—’all the emails Blumenthal sent to [Mrs.] Clinton,'” he writes.

That is incorrect, Taranto notes. “[I]n reality she turned over no emails, only printouts,” which are of limited value as evidence.

Meanwhile, as evidence continues to accumulate that Clinton’s cavalier approach to state secrets put U.S. national security in jeopardy, the shady background of Abedin, who has known ties to the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood, is barely acknowledged on Capitol Hill.

Instead of examining Abedin’s disturbing family ties that make her employment by the U.S. government a threat to national security, Grassley is honing in on the sweetheart arrangement that allowed the operative to get on the public payroll while raking in money from private consulting.

Obama Leaks Israeli Nuke Secrets

My article in today's FrontPage magazine:

Obama Leaks Israeli Nuke Secrets

By Matthew Vadum

President Obama ratcheted up his personal war on the State of Israel and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by leaking Israel’s nuclear secrets to the media.

This betrayal of one of America’s most loyal allies took the form of the Pentagon’s quiet declassification of a 386-page top-secret memo, titled, “Critical Technological Assessment in Israel and NATO Nations.” The report from 1987, released just before Netanyahu’s address March 3 to a joint session of the U.S. Congress, goes into intricate detail about the Israeli nuclear weapons program and explains how Israel became a nuclear power in the 1970s and 1980s.

Israel is “developing the kind of codes which will enable them to make hydrogen bombs,” according to the report by the taxpayer-funded Institute for Defense Analysis. “That is, codes which detail fission and fusion processes on a microscopic and macroscopic level.”

By the 1980s Israelis were close to being able to produce bombs a thousand times more powerful than atomic bombs, the report states.

Israel’s nuclear infrastructure is “an almost exact parallel of the capability currently existing at our National Laboratories,” it states, noting that research facilities in Israel  “are equivalent to our Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore and Oak Ridge National Laboratories,” which have been essential to the development of the U.S. nuclear arms program.

BREAKING: Taliban-Loving Traitor Bowe Bergdahl FINALLY Charged With Something

U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who defected to the Taliban but was freed after President Obama released five members of the terrorist high command, has been charged with desertion and "misbehavior before the enemy."

Dan Lamothe of the Washington Post reports
Eugene Fidell, Bergdahl’s attorney, told The Washington Post that his client was handed a charge sheet on Tuesday. Army officials announced they will provide an update in his case at 3:30 p.m. at Fort Bragg, N.C., but declined to discuss new developments ahead of the news conference.
Bergdahl, 28, went missing from his base in Paktika province on June 30, 2009, and is believed to have grown disillusioned with the U.S. military’s mission in Afghanistan. He was held captive in Pakistan by the Haqqani network, an insurgent group allied with the Taliban, until a deal brokered through the government of Qatar was reached last year.
Unfortunately, this appears to mean Bergdahl will not face a firing squad.

I wrote about the Bergdahl case in the June 4, 2014 issue of FrontPage magazine.

President Obama's behavior in this case is illegal, impeachable, and treasonable.

House Armed Services Committee Chairman Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), and Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), denounced the prisoner swap which traded five enemy generals for one vile traitor.

“Trading five senior Taliban leaders from detention in Guantanamo Bay for Bergdahl’s release may have consequences for the rest of our forces and all Americans,” the two lawmakers said. “Our terrorist adversaries now have a strong incentive to capture Americans. That incentive will put our forces in Afghanistan and around the world at even greater risk.”

At the time the Obama administration portrayed Bergdahl as a hero.

Obama unleashed the White House propaganda machine to spread false information about this stinker of a deal. Naturally, he used White House National Security Adviser Susan Rice as his TV talking head. Rice also served as reelection candidate Obama’s emergency first-prevaricator on the Benghazi coverup in fall 2012.

Rice went on TV to spread the administration’s bogus cover story. She said with a straight face that Bergdahl “served the United States with honor and distinction.”

“Sergeant Bergdahl wasn’t simply a hostage; he was an American prisoner of war captured on the battlefield.”

The Left’s Ted Cruz Freakout

My article from the March 24, 2015 issue of FrontPage magazine:

Matthew Vadum with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Awesome)

The Left’s Ted Cruz Freakout

By Matthew Vadum

Much of the political world went into full freakout mode yesterday as crusading conservative Ted Cruz became the first candidate from either of the major parties to formally announce he is running for president in 2016.

The ritual denunciations of Cruz, the junior Republican senator representing Texas, from all across the fruited plain quickly piled up. Since he assumed office in January 2013, Cruz has come under intense fire from the Left and from a few corners in the GOP. Some of the criticism is well thought out but much of it doesn’t rise above the level of schoolyard taunts. Some consider it a negative that Cruz, like Barack Obama, began running for president soon after becoming a U.S. senator.

His willingness to buck members of his own party –and to openly criticize other Republicans– when his conservative principles require it has won him legions of admirers across America, but few friends in official Washington. GOP leaders don’t like him because he questions what they stand for, tries to force them to honor their promises, calls them “squishes,” and works to derail their legislative priorities. He has even tried to engineer mini-rebellions in the House by whipping House members to vote against GOP leadership. Finding sympathetic lawmakers is like shooting fish in a barrel because Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) disappoints conservatives nearly every day.

To some, Cruz’s strengths are really weaknesses. His brash air of rectitude is arrogance. His eloquence is unctuousness. His unquestioned brilliance is viewed with suspicion.

Durbin’s ‘Racism’ Smear Infuriates Republicans

My article from the March 23, 2015 issue of FrontPage magazine:

Durbin’s ‘Racism’ Smear Infuriates Republicans

By Matthew Vadum

Republicans were angered last week when the Senate’s second highest ranking Democrat accused them of racism for delaying a confirmation vote for leftist radical Loretta Lynch’s nomination as U.S. attorney general.

“Loretta Lynch, the first African-American woman nominated to be attorney general, is asked to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to the Senate calendar,” said Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), in an unsubtle reference to the civil rights movement’s campaign to desegregate public transit. “That is unfair. It’s unjust. It is beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate. This woman deserves fairness.”

It has long been axiomatic that when liberals and progressives are fretting about possibly losing a political fight they scream “racist!” repeatedly at the top of their lungs as if sheer repetition of the smear will somehow make it true.

It was the mark of desperation. No more. Now it is standard operating procedure for the Left. When in doubt, call Republicans racists. It works almost every time as the last few decades have shown — and is an especially powerful weapon in the Obama era.

Durbin made the scurrilous racism allegation while Democrats held a press conference in an attempt to reinvigorate the Left’s dishonest “war on women” campaign against the GOP.

“This egregious delay is all in the name of scoring political points by catering to the extreme right wing of the Republican party,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.). “We are not even three months into this new Congress, and the new majority has done nothing but play partisan politics with some of our nation’s most critical issues.”

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, the first black Southern Republican elected to the Senate since Reconstruction, said Durbin’s remarks about the Lynch confirmation process were “factually and patently false. Period.”

“It is helpful to have a long memory and to remember that Durbin voted against Condoleezza Rice during the 40th anniversary of the March [on Selma]. So I think, in context, it’s just offensive that we have folks who are willing to race bait on such an important issue as human trafficking,” said Scott. “Sometimes people use race as an issue that is hopefully going to motivate folks for their fight. But what it does, is it infuriates people.”

Even the occasional left-winger took umbrage at Durbin’s remarks.

Berkeley Radicals Want to Honor Cop-Killing Communist

My article in today's FrontPage magazine:

Berkeley Radicals Want to Honor Cop-Killing Communist

By Matthew Vadum

Disgruntled black students at the University of California at Berkeley are demanding a campus building be named after convicted cop-killing terrorist and fugitive from justice, Assata Shakur.

The reason for the demand? In the stated opinion of the school’s Black Student Union, blacks are disrespected on campus. BSU member Cori McGowens told reporters that “trying to excel academically is immensely difficult while coping with the issue of antiblackness on campus.”

“It troubles me that I have already been told countless times that antiblackness is not an issue to discuss within the context of the American political system,” said McGowens, a political science major. “My professors and graduate-student instructors have told me that I shouldn’t bring up the politics of race and the reality of my black experience.”

That politically correct, ultra-leftist UC Berkeley would be infected by “antiblackness” or that teachers there would tell any student of color to shut up about race is nearly impossible to believe. Viewing America through the Marxist lens of race, sex, and class, is all that today’s predominantly leftist academics spend their time doing. Professors can’t stop talking about race or any of the picayune peeves about which the Left constantly obsesses.

But the Black Student Union maintains that somehow black students on that campus are victims of oppression and feel isolated. To remedy these perceived problems the group delivered a set of 10 demands to Chancellor Nick Dirks. One of the demands is to rename Barrows Hall, home to Ethnic Studies, Women’s Studies, and African American Studies, to honor communist murderer Shakur.

Dirks sent out a letter pandering to the students.

“Too many students have told us about being excluded from study groups, ignored during class discussions, verbally harassed at parties and social events, and feeling, in a general sense, vulnerable, isolated, and invisible,” he wrote. “This is something we deplore.”

He added that Berkeley’s black students “feel the least respected of any group on campus” according to a survey taken last year.

According to a San Francisco Chronicle article that actually takes the students’ bratty-sounding complaints seriously,
“The demands include hiring nine people, including two black psychologists experienced in racial discrimination and advisers to recruit and mentor black students and student athletes; creating an African American Student Resource Center; and — in a different vein — renaming a building after Assata Shakur, a former Black Panther and the first woman on the FBI’s list of Most Wanted Terrorists.”
Why Shakur? Because she’s a role model in the eyes of radicals.

Obama Urges Soviet-Style Voting Laws

My article from today's FrontPage magazine:

Obama Urges Soviet-Style Voting Laws

By Matthew Vadum

Forcing Americans to vote under threat of legal penalty would help to fundamentally transform America, President Obama told a town hall-style meeting in Cleveland yesterday.

It is the latest radical leveling scheme that flows from the president’s totalitarian impulses. It is also consistent with his support for “Net Neutrality,” which is a form of censorship and his opposition to the landmark Citizens United decision that affirmed a conservative activist group’s constitutionally guaranteed right to make a movie critical of Hillary Clinton. It is an assault on American democracy itself because one of the ways that people express themselves politically is to stay home on Election Day. Compelled speech is not free speech.

“It would be transformative if everybody voted,” Obama said just months after his party was crushed in off-year congressional elections that gave Republicans control of both houses of Congress.

“That would counteract [campaign] money more than anything,” the president said during a discussion about reducing the role of money in elections. “If everybody voted, then it would completely change the political map in this country.”

Australia and a handful of other countries have mandatory voting laws, he noted. Pushing for such laws in the U.S. “may end up being a better strategy in the short term” than attacking Americans’ right to make campaign donations.

It would be “fun” for the U.S. to look at a constitutional amendment taking aim at campaign money, he said, but “realistically, given the requirements of that process, that would be a long-term proposition.” (Such a proposed constitutional amendment is currently pending in Congress.)

Obama whined that Democrats often don’t get around to voting in midterm elections. “The people who tend not to vote are young, they’re lower income, they’re skewed more heavily towards immigrant groups and minority groups,” he said.

Pamela Geller Wins Right to Run Ads in Philly

My article in today's FrontPage magazine:

Pamela Geller Wins Right to Run Ads in Philly

By Matthew Vadum

A federal court has struck a blow for the First Amendment by ordering Philadelphia’s public transit system to accept an eye-opening ad that spotlights Islamic Jew-hatred and urges the United States to cut off foreign aid to Muslim countries.

The hard-hitting public service announcement, which contains a photograph of a real-life meeting between Adolf Hitler and Muslim leader and Nazi collaborator Hajj Amin al-Husseini, is sponsored by the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI), which was co-founded by conservative leader and blogger Pamela Geller. AFDI placed the ad in New York City and Washington, D.C. public transit systems after litigating the matter in court. It has also attempted to place ads in transit systems in Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco, and elsewhere.

It’s just the latest in a string of legal victories for Geller.

For example, in 2012 Geller won her legal fight to post an anti-Islamist ad in the New York City subway system. Quoting Ayn Rand, the ad read, “In any war between the civilized man and the savage support the civilized man. Support Israel. Defeat Jihad.” The ad was a response to ads in the NYC subway promoting Islam and others accusing Israel of a number of things including being an obstacle to peace in the Middle East.

Hillary’s Damage Control Isn’t Working

My article from today's FrontPage magazine:

Hillary’s Damage Control Isn’t Working

By Matthew Vadum

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s efforts to douse the growing furor over her possibly illegal private email system are not going well.

The Obama White House, which claims the president knew nothing about Clinton’s surreptitious email system, unceremoniously threw the former cabinet member under the bus this week.

“Frankly, the secretary’s handling of her own personal email and the maintenance of [her] personal email inbox is something that I’m not going to comment on and not particularly interested in,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

President Obama, who reportedly detests the Clintons, may himself have played a role in revealing Hillary’s email misbehavior. That Obama didn’t know about the secret email system is simply too fantastic to believe. The president may have been holding the email saga back as a trump card, waiting for the best time to crush his former rival for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Of course, there is a certain poetry to one ruthless, venal Saul Alinsky disciple undermining another.

Many conservatives who watched the press conference at the United Nations on Tuesday in which reporters asked genuinely probing questions challenging Clinton’s version of the facts about her James Bond villain-like email setup are now experiencing schadenfreude. Hillary has gotten away with so much premeditated deception for so many decades that observing her being vigorously cross-examined by journalists is a surreal, cathartic experience for many. It is therapy for the conservative soul.

Her hypocrisy knows no bounds. Remember it was in 2007 that then-Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) accused George W. Bush’s administration of using “secret White House email accounts” and secret wiretaps and military tribunals.

“You know, our Constitution is being shredded,” she said then.

Hillary, as Americans have come to know, is a shameless, prolific, pathological liar, probably even more than her impeached husband. But who would have thought that after so long in the public eye doing damage control, spending so long cleaning up after Bill Clinton’s seemingly unending “bimbo eruptions,” she would be so inept at handling what might otherwise not be a career-ending scandal? It now seems the email imbroglio could very well be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Hillary’s Missing Emails

My article from the March 10, 2015 issue of FrontPage magazine:

Hillary’s Missing Emails

By Matthew Vadum

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s email scandal widened as the lead Republican investigator into the deadly Benghazi fiasco accused Clinton of failing to hand over months of emails from her tenure.

“There are gaps of months and months and months,” Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, said Sunday on “Face the Nation” on CBS.
“If you think [back] to that iconic picture of her on a C-17 flying to Libya — she has sunglasses on, and she has her hand-held device in her hand — we have no emails from that day. And we have no emails from that trip.”
Gowdy’s committee has repeatedly subpoenaed records related to the Sept. 11, 2012 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, so “it strains credibility to believe that if you’re on your way to Libya to discuss Libyan policy that there’s not a single document that’s been turned over to Congress,” he said.

The Benghazi bungler, Americans recently learned, created an email system worthy of a James Bond movie villain when she became top U.S. diplomat in 2009. Clinton used private instead of government email and even established her own private email server that has been traced back to her Chappaqua, N.Y., home address. It seems likely that Clinton’s fast and loose approach to email compromised U.S. national security.

Last week Gowdy issued subpoenas for Clinton’s communications dealing with Benghazi. He also directed Internet companies to preserve the emails.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) said using the subpoena power to force the former first lady to hand over the missing emails is necessary because “voluntary cooperation does not guarantee that it’s a crime not to deliver all.”

“A subpoena, which Trey Gowdy issued, is so that in fact it will be a crime if she knowingly withholds documents pursuant to [the] subpoena,” Issa said. “He needed to do that because she wasn’t forthcoming 2 1/2 years ago. She in fact hid the very existence of this until she was caught.”

With the revelation that mountains of electronic correspondence have not been accounted for, the still-unfolding scandal is now becoming eerily reminiscent of President Nixon’s Watergate scandal in which 18 1/2 minutes of audio disappeared from secret recordings made in the White House. The recordings that were intelligible revealed that he attempted to cover up a break-in at the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate Hotel in the nation’s capital, along with other illegal activities that had taken place during his administration. Nixon resigned in 1974 after the Supreme Court ruled that he had to turn over the tapes to congressional investigators.

Dems Spin Furiously for Hillary

My article from the March 5, 2015 issue of FrontPage magazine:

Dems Spin Furiously for Hillary

By Matthew Vadum

Democrats are circling the wagons to shield their likely 2016 presidential nominee after it was revealed that Hillary Clinton transacted sensitive government business using her personal email during her time as America’s top diplomat.

The Benghazi bungler, the nation has learned, set up an email system worthy of a James Bond movie villain when she became U.S. secretary of state in 2009. Mrs. Clinton used private instead of government email and even established her own private email server that has been traced back to her Chappaqua, N.Y., home address.

“You do not need a law degree to have an understanding of how troubling this is. There are chain of custody issues, there are preservation of material and documents issues [and] there spoliation of evidence issues,” said Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), head of the Benghazi select committee. “One should also be concerned about the national security implications of former Secretary Clinton of using exclusively personal email accounts for the conducting of official U.S. foreign policy.”

Hillary, the longtime Saul Alinsky groupie who believes the ends justify the means, went through all this trouble because she didn’t want her performance in office to be an obstacle to her pursuit of the presidency.

Eliminating a trail of documents that might have an adverse impact on her expected 2016 presidential run improves Clinton’s electoral chances. Clinton has turned over thousands of emails from her personal account to the Department of State in recent months, but that doesn’t change the fact that the records were not available to the public the last six years by way of Freedom of Information Act requests.

We can only imagine what’s in the missing trove of electronic correspondence. There could be evidence of Clinton’s mishandling of the terrorist attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead. There could be evidence that the donations that foreign governments have been flooding the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation with in recent years are in fact anticipatory bribes given in advance of a second Clinton administration. (There is already evidence that not all foreign donations to the foundation were vetted by the State Department.) The foundation itself serves as Mrs. Clinton’s de facto campaign headquarters and employs individuals likely to move over to her official campaign whenever she gets around to officially declaring herself a candidate for president.
